Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured AiPT! Podcast co-host Jason Segarra and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Cards on the table, I have no idea what this series is about, but I love this cover. The coloring on this thing is beautiful and the imagery stark. Like so many great sci-fi series, this looks like it could be the cover of a prog rock album, or like the best anime series being traded at your local convention. If you (like me) hadn’t heard of Low before this, you (like me) will probably be inspired to pick this one off the shelf at your LCS.
The Realm #14

I know I just evangelized for sci-fi madness but I also love witchy fantasy imagery, and Haun loads this thing up with a ton of cool imagery. I love the face, the crown, the subtle slit in the sacrificial stag’s throat– the image is sultry, scary and powerful all at once. Really strong stuff from this artist.
Hope: A Comic for Flint #1

This cover from Jesse Augustine is a fun homage to the oft-politically minded grafitti of Banksy, but, I think Hope is an important book to pay attention to for an entirely different reason. For this book, Jonathan Diener (drummer for pop punk band The Swellers and native of Flint, Michigan) pulled together a cadre of artists and authors to create an anthology of stories to benefit The Compass, a program of the Michigan Community services that helps adults with developmental disabilities find job placement among other worthwhile deeds. There are few books on the shelf as meaningful as this one from Source Point, so why not pick up a copy when you’re grabbing the first issue of Powers of X?

Elvira: The Shape of Elvira #4

I love me an Elvira cover. This series in particular has had some fun ones, with this issue’s being possibly the best yet. Francavilla’s style is a great fit for the monstrosity of it all, and the textures and colors here are great.
Ice Cream Man #13

This is a very nice horror cover. I haven’t been keeping up with this series, but this image instantly gets my attention and makes me wonder what I’ve been missing out on. The unnerving face sliding into the shadows is a classic touch, and the renderings of sprinkles as people are also well-done. With that said, my favorite detail is probably the melted ice cream down the character’s glove. The placement of it brings to line both bones and blood, effectively taking the theoretically innocuous subject matter and making it scary.

This is fun. Sometimes I just need an impressive and polished shot of heroes facing forward, and that’s what Adams delivers here. I really dig the Kirby krackle in the background too.
