There’s been a disturbance in the force, as if millions of nerd voices suddenly cried out in happiness — as if news of Ewan McGregor returning to Star Wars broke. While nothing has been confirmed yet, sources tell Variety and Deadline that the 48-year old Ewan McGregor is in talks to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney+ event mini-series.
McGregor was last seen on screen in 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, however, he did have a very brief audio-only cameo in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While a big-screen return was planned for Kenobi in the form of an anthology film, sources say the poor box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story have prompted Disney to instead explore an Obi-Wan Kenobi focused mini-series on their new streaming platform.
Fans have held McGregor in the highest regard ever since his debut in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, with some regarding his performance as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi as one of the few bright spots of the often-maligned prequel trilogy. No plot details or target release date have been announced yet, but Star Wars fans have been clamoring for more McGregor as Obi-Wan since Disney announced plans to explore spin-off movies and TV shows, making today’s news a cause for galaxy-wide celebration.
If Disney moves forward with production, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will join The Mandalorian and the yet-to-be-titled Cassian Andor series as the first live-action Star Wars series to launch on Disney+.
