DCeased: A Good Day to Die #1 Review

Mister Terrific, Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and John Constantine pull together to save the world or die trying.

Fans of the C-listers and lower, here is a book that screams out to the underdog and the everyman.  Tom Taylor extends his DCeased miniseries with this one-shot that goes to the heart of the matter as Mister Terrific tries to find a way to stop the virus from Apokolips and hopefully save the world.  Now, this series has not been for the faint of heart and even the World’s Greatest Superheroes haven’t been safe, but if you want to see some amazing moments and last stands, then this is a good comic to read. Let’s dive in and get some SPOILERS!

I love the team that is gathered here in this issue…it’s like a mini-JLI reunion with some other fan favorites.  The chemistry is fantastic and the heroics really come forth from each of these characters.  Tom Taylor is amazing at writing multiple heroes from any walk of life; he gets into their mindset and makes the moments worthwhile for us.  We know no one is safe, and if you are coming here because one of your favorite heroes is in this comic then get ready to see the bravado turned up and the heroics stand out.

DC Comics

With the creative team involved we have Tom Taylor as the sole writer, but he has quite the art team beside him: Laura Braga, Darick Robertson, Richard Friend, and Trevor Scott. Honestly, all of these artists mesh really well, and the story was so rich that I didn’t notice artist changes.  Laura Braga does a great job paying homage to Mitch Gerads by having the Scott and Barda solo pages be in the nine-panel page style of Mister Miracle, and Tom Taylor does his best homage by having Mister Miracle offer a veggie plate — a beautiful moment that shows the character has real traits.

All the characters are represented very nicely and their voice carries over in this situation they find themselves.  Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are just as ridiculous as always, but they also still make that hard call when it comes down to the big play; I know I’ve been wanting a Blue and Gold book myself and Taylor just goes to show that he should write it.  John Constantine is also represented in his very cavalier ways, but we’ve seen Taylor handle John back in Injustice so it’s no surprise that Taylor can channel John perfectly.  It’s nice to see Taylor get some new characters to play with in Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and Mister Terrific.

DCeased A Good Day to Die, DC Comics

Taylor really shows the love that Miracle and Barda have for each other.  Their heroism shines and once again those character moments are displayed nicely, especially when Mister Miracle starts quoting Cher to Big Barda.  Mister Terrific was great to see in this series and I love that his technology abilities were used here, as his mask kept him safe from the virus being transferred via technology screens.  This group overall was a great mix of technology, New Gods, magic, and time travel.

This is a worthwhile issue to add to your DCeased collection, and if you’re a fan of any one of these characters I would pick it up.  This comic has its own merit and can stand alone without the mini-series as well.  Hopefully in the mainstream DCU we can see these characters team up.

DCeased: A Good Day to Die
Is it good?
A fantastic one-shot that gives fan favorite heroes a moment to shine in a horribly dark version of the DC Universe. If you haven't been reading DCeased, then start here with this amazing one-shot.
Tom Taylor uses his amazing skills as a writer to bring these characters to life in a dying world
The art team involved creates amazing pages and panels for dramatic action
Unique teaming of various DC heroes with great pay out
This is a one shot -- I would love to see more of these characters with this creative team
