One of the joys of reading Marvel’s Epic Collections is coming across surprising moments, weird ideas, and the somewhat hidden away of past stories in the universe. One instance of this occurred when I was reviewing Thor Epic Collection: The Black Galaxy which featured an issue where Excalibur thought Thor was Juggernaut. To their eyes, they didn’t see the blonde long hair, but the brown hulking Juggernaut. This story was written and penciled by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz.
The fight takes place in Thor #427 and is quite an interesting one since most of the heroes, from Nightcrawler to Captain Britain, can’t stop Thor. That is, until Kitty Pryde phases Thor into the ground!
Considering how much pain Thor is in, how the heck would Juggernaut have lived through this? Also, when someone is phased into something solid, don’t they explode? This story carries over into Thor #428 and on the first page we see Thor screaming and Kitty Pryde sorta just standing there. That’s cold, Kitty!
It turns out that Thor can’t pull himself out of the ground, but Mjolnir can. Leave it to Thor to use his hammer as a last-second trick to move the plot along! The fight continues on and Captain Britain and Thor share a lot of blows. It’s pretty clear they won’t be able to defeat him, nor will Thor really defeat them since he doesn’t want to. It’s not until the Wrecking Crew run off that the spell is dropped and they can all see it’s Thor instead of Juggernaut.
Shockingly, Excalibur has not a single apology for all that they did to Thor. Thankfully Thor is all business, but before they can part ways Captain Britain demands to know where Juggernaut is so they can complete their mission.
This spins things off into an off-world adventure where Juggernaut is the law on another planet. At least at the end of all this we know Kitty Pryde could easily take out Thor.
