Cody Rhodes reaffirmed on Twitter he “was not unprofessional” when approaching CM Punk about working with AEW, and that no offer was made via text. A big question on wrestling fans’ minds is how AEW and Tony Khan hadn’t managed to pull in CM Punk and make an offer to bring him back to wrestling. CM Punk called out Cody back in July for trying to initiate an offer via text.
The last thing I got — I got a text from Cody. And again, I almost don’t even know how to reply to them sometimes, because if I reply, they do interviews and are like, “Oh yeah, I just talked to Punk.” I’m kind of damned if I do, damned if I don’t. I always think if somebody wants to do business with me, they can come talk to me. Texting offers isn’t really a way to do good business, at least.
It’s possible Punk may have misunderstood the text conversation from Cody as an offer and not opening the lines of communication to do so in the future. Considering Punk has joined the panel of WWE Backstage on Fox, one could assume he wasn’t interested in returning to wrestling unless he was on the grandest stage of them all, making the most money. The only way to know for sure is if he decides to return under the WWE umbrella.
