‘Gwenpool Strikes Back!’ #5 connects to Dawn of X, X-Men, and Krakoa

Gwenpool is changed forever in the final issue.

Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.

If you haven’t been reading Gwenpool Strikes Back! you’ve been missing some excellent, and super meta, comic book storytelling from Leah Williams and David Baldeon. In this series, Gwenpool is attempting to prevent her book from being cancelled, and by extension prevent her character from being forgotten forever. It has been a wild ride pitting heroes against each other, becoming a villain, and in this final issue fighting Ms. Marvel. That is, until Ms. Marvel lays down some hard truths.

Yep, Gwenpool is a mutant. Ms. Marvel argues her mutant power is likely reality manipulation and that would explain why a lot of her past.

But wait, is this really real? Gwenpool later says in a caption, “I’m not a mutant. I know that.” Later on, however, Gwenpool does something only mutants can do.

She goes through a Krakoan gate, which is something only mutants can teleport through. Confirmed!

In Gwenpool’s own words, Krakoa saved her from being forgotten. She now has a place amongst the merry Marvel heroes as a mutant. Now, when or where she shows up in a Dawn of X book remains to be seen! This development also makes sense since Gwenpool editor Jordan White is also the X-Men editor, go figure. This is only a sliver of the story though and I highly recommend you read the whole issue.
So what do you think Gwenpool fans, do you like the fact that she is now a mutant hero? How does this change her going forward? Sound off in the comments.
