Marvel Comics’ April 2020 solicitations: It’s war with Empyre and X-Men, plus Inferno 101 with Magik

It’s that time again, when Marvel breaks the comics news industry in half with their solicitations. Today, we have the entire April 2020 solicitations complete with cover art! Some of these solicitations and covers have already been revealed exclusively here and on other websites, but there are still new details to discover. Of those details, these are my takeaways.

First off, Empyre appears to be heating up a battle between the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Check out an unlettered preview of the first issue here. According to the solicit for the first issue, the FF wants to be diplomatic while the Avengers are gearing up for a full-fledged war. Judging by the solicitation for issue #2 of Empyre it sounds like the FF and Avengers will be split up, though. How might this affect Franklin Richards and his new book X-Men/Fantastic Four by Chip Zdarsky? Given that issue #4 is solicited as the final issue, a whole lot of drama and climax I’m sure. Apparently that takes place on the “Island of Doom,” wherever that might be. Meanwhile, in the Spider-Man Empyre tie-in, one of Spidey’s archenemies is going to use the Empyre war to strike. Who might that be (please say Harry Osborn recently seen in Web of Venom: The Good Son)?

While the battle rages on Earth and the moon, it appears X-Men will also be locating its story on the moon with issue #10. The “new neighbors” remain to be seen, but maybe they’re Kree or Skrull? It can’t possibly be as hard as it is for Cable to manage five girlfriends…right? That’s what is happening in Cable #2, while in Hellions #2, Mr. Sinister appears to be giving the Hellions the job to clean up his messes. Over in Excalibur, it appears Tini Howard is managing a war of her own as Britain goes to war with Krakoa. Meanwhile, in Marauders it sounds like the Russian government is a direct threat to Krakoa. Ed Brisson is exploring what it’s like to integrate into the Krakoan society further developing character. Finally, Benjamin Percy has Wolverine #3 focusing on Logan fighting cartels and in X-Force #10 a mutant member is dealing with secrets. It sounds like a lot of drama for our merry mutants!

I have to give props to whoever wrote the Strange Academy #2 solicitation in the form of a class schedule for the day that’s quite hilarious. Inferno 101 with Magik is so perfect. Scroll down to read that one.

Marvel’s mini-event 2020 continues to rage on in April with Ironheart written by Vita Ayala and Danny Lore, kicking into gear with the first issue in a two-parter. Meanwhile, Rescue and Force Works end while Iron Man 2020 reaches its fourth issue in a six-issue series. If you’re fatigued from the events already gear up now, because it appears Nick Spencer is setting up a “Sins Rising” story arc with Sin-Eater, which was teased at the end of Amazing Spider-Man #37. Let’s just hope Kindred’s identity gets revealed in 2020.

And then, in a collection of interestingly phrased solicits, Thor must become “something else”, Black Cat is fighting Iron Man, and Venom must make a “life-altering decision.” Oh, and from the looks of it Darth Vader is teaming up with Padme even though she’s been long dead. Damn guys, it’s a big month at Marvel!
