Sundance 2020: The best films from the Sundance Film Festival

The best movies and documentaries from Sundance.

The Sundance Film Festival has come and gone. True to its reputation, the event was home to some great movies and documentaries. From wonderfully weird Netflix originals to a fun look at one of the 80s most influential bands to a shocking cover up, Sundance shined its light on some wonderful releases. Here are the best films from the Sundance Film Festival.

Horse Girl

Sundance 2020: The best films from the Sundance Film Festival

The synopsis does not even scratch the surface. Sarah (Alison Brie) is a socially awkward girl who cares for a horse and a supernatural police procedural. Her life starts to change when she looks into her family history. Horse Girl is the definition of genre defying. A laugh out loud story that merges many different types of movies, the story is impossible to turn away from. Brie does her usual fantastic job in a movie that is as good as it is confusing.

The Go Go’s

In the entertainment business, it is all about being at the right place at the right time. More often than not, talent only goes so far; it is circumstances that push people into immortality. The Go Go’s were one of the most talented bands coming out of the Los Angeles punk scene. Through hard work and trial and error they put themselves on the brink of superstardom. MTV came along and made them legends. Director Allison Ellwood’s documentary chronicles the rise and fall of the band while managing to avoid the tedium that tends to come with music docs.

Worth

Sundance 2020: The best films from the Sundance Film Festival

Sara Colangelo’s movie does not pull any punces. It begins with Michael Keaton asking the worth of a human life. He is able to answer the question within minutes. Keaton plays Kenneth Feinberg, the lawyer tasked by the government to figure out how to compensate the families of the victims of 9/11.  What seems like an emotionally manipulative story becomes a powerful film about loss, redemption, and discovery.

Church and the Fourth Estate

One of the most difficult movies to watch during Sundance was Brian Knappenberger’s latest documentary. Church and the Fourth Estate looks at a frightening cover up in a small Idaho town. A local Boys Scout Camp leader is accused of sexually abusing one of the campers. Once the news is reported, the Mormon Church and the richest man in Idaho become involved in a sickening display of power.

Possessor

Brandon Cronenberg’s second feature film will leave an impression on anyone who sees it. Vivid and violent, Possessor follows Tasya Vos, a women who uses technology to enter people’s brains and have them commit crimes. The lasting effects lead to one what will end up being one of the wildest movies of the year. The movie alternates between being a quiet intimate film and over the top and gory. A creative and mind bending horror movie that will test your limits.
