SXSW (At Home): ‘Echoes of the Invisible’ Review

‘Echoes of the Invisible’ is about finding ourselves.

AIPT will continue some of its planned coverage of SXSW. We have been in contact with creators and their representatives in order to continue to give films coverage. We will respect all embargoes and work to give these films and our readers the coverage we had planned.

Reaching a state of bliss and calm can seem impossible today. The technology that has made our world a smaller place includes apps for dating, subscription services for everything from clothes to food, and the ability to have seemingly every song ever on our phones. It is impossible to leave a digital world that resides in every part of it?

Movies are one way to seek refuge. They are an escape that can make a person laugh, cry, and just forget about the insanity of the real world. There are also plenty of films that exist just to relax a person. But is it possible for a movie to be too calming?

Echoes of the Invisible is a documentary that tells a series of tales about seemingly impossible quests. What the subjects of the film are trying to accomplish is nothing short of amazing. One journalist attempts to retrace a 21,000 migration path on foot while an artist wants to photograph the oldest continuously living things on earth. It is fascinating watching the two try to complete the world’s most creative bucket lists.

The film’s headier moments are just as soothing. There is a marked difference, however. The terminology becomes very scientific. It is not a deal breaker, but it can be a little difficult to follow for viewers like me who start to sweat a little at the thought to science and/or math. But even during these more scholarly moments, Echoes of the Invisible is always about the same thing. The documentary is about being human.

Whether the documentary is focusing on scientists talking astrophysics or monks finding tranquility, the story focuses on people trying to find their place in the universe. Echoes of the Invisible moves at a patient pace that further adds to the film’s overall theme. From ts arguably too soothing soundtrack to moments that show off the power of silence, the documentary constantly reinforces the same message. No matter where we are or what we do, at our core, we just want to find out where we belong.
