Channel Surfing: TV Picks for the Week of 03/23/2020

Stumptown ends, Vagrant Queen begins and some Broken Lizard foolishness.

As one comics-based television show ends its first season, another one begins. This week, freshman crime drama, Stumptown, airs its season finale while sci-fi space opera, Vagrant Queen, premieres. Also, some of the Broken Lizard crew come back for the second season of Tacoma FD.

Love & Murder

Greg Rucka and Matthew Southworth’s Stumptown first hit local comic shops over a decade ago. Now the modern noir book has leaped from the pages onto the small screen courtesy of ABC. Since it began last fall, the show has connected with both critics and viewers alike and this Wednesday comes the first season’s finale.

Throughout the season, Benny Black Bird has been referenced but fans didn’t see him appear until last episode. We started to receive his backstory and a look into his relationship with Dax. Hopefully we’ll learn more about his death as Dex digs deeper into her memories of Afghanistan. Also, she’s framed for murder and must clear her name.

Firehouse Fun

truTV isn’t a name that comes to mind when thinking about scripted television so it was a surprise to see how successful Tacoma FD was last year. The half hour comedy follows the exploits and hijinks of a group of firefighters in one of the country’s rainiest cities. It was created and stars Broken Lizard members, Kevin Heffernan (Farva!) and Steve Lemme.

Look out for more shenanigans as the squad fights fires at a haunted house, become trapped in an elevator during the annual Firefighter’s Ball and create fire safety videos with the buffest group of firefighters in Tacoma. Noted guest stars this season include Bobby Moynihan, Joe Pantoliano and Jeff Dunham.

A Galactic Adventure

Oni Press isn’t the only non-Big Two publisher with a show this week. Vault Comics’ Vagrant Queen debuts this Friday on SyFy. The source material is from Eisner nominated writer, Magdalene Visaggio, and artist, Jason Smith.

The story follows the daughter of a former queen trying to stay alive in a harsh world. Her current life is a far cry from royalty as she’s a scavenger and outlaw. When a past associate brings news about her long-lost mother, she must head back to her former kingdom to make a daring rescue. The show stars Adriyan Rae, Tim Rozon and Alex McGregor.
