Riverdale gets musical, What We Do in the Shadows season 2 and Spider-Man vs. Venom

A pair of comics influenced shows and a vampire comedy highlight this week’s TV picks. The annual Riverdale musical episode tackles Hedwig and the Angry Inch this Wednesday. Premiering the same night is the second season of the FX horror comedy, What We Do in the Shadows. Then on Sunday, Disney XD’s Spider-Man returns for a third season in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom.

Riverdale Gets Angry

Beginning with season two, Riverdale has had an annual musical episode. In the past, they carried out high school productions of both Carrie and Heathers. This year, the dark reimagining of the Archie Comic Universe will tackle Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

When a teacher forbids Kevin from singing a number from Hedwig at the school’s variety show, he rallies the gang to rebel against the principal. They hijack the talent show by having each person perform a song from the musical. Riverdale, along with other CW shows, have been gradually returning after COVID-19 forced some delays. Watch ‘Wicked Little Town’ on Wednesday night, April 15.

Vampires in NYC

Before he made the blockbuster, Thor: Ragnarok, and the critically acclaimed, Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi co-wrote and co-directed the horror comedy, What We Do in the Shadows. Last year, a show based on the film was created by Waititi’s collaborator, Jemaine Clement. The series follows the lives of four vampire roommates in New York City.

This Wednesday, April 15, the show’s second season begins on FX with Laszlo, Nadja and Nandor taking more strides towards assimilating into present American society including attending a Super Bowl party and performing at an open mic night. Plus, it looks like Guillermo is embracing his Van Helsing ancestry and Colin is finding new ways to satiate his energy vampirism.

Symbiote Invasion

There might be limited new comics coming out every week, but at least there’s new comic TV. Marvel’s Spider-Man arrives for a third season with an addition to the title, Maximum Venom. Your friendly neighborhood superhero gets more cosmic as Captain Marvel, Groot and Star-Lord pay a visit while Spider-Man confronts an earth-shattering threat summoned by Venom from its home planet.

In addition to the visiting marvel characters, there will be slew of special guests including Yvette Nicole Brown as Head Administrator, Sofia Wylie as Ironheart/Riri Williams and Felicia Day as Mary Jane Watson, who makes her debut appearance this season. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom premieres on Sunday evening, April 19, on Disney XD.
