Dune set photos revealed, first look at Oscar Issac and more

Get your first look at the members of House Atreides.

Following yesterday’s first look at Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming remake of Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi novel, Dune, Vanity Fair has unveiled a handful of new photos showing off the key members of House Atreides. Witness the debut of Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Jason, Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Jessica Fergusson.

For the first time the iconic Fremen stillsuits are on display, with Chalamet and Rebecca Fergusson, in the role of his on-screen mother Lady Jessica Atreides, seen wearing them. If the film follows the book closely, we can assume this image is at some point on Paul and Jessica’s journey into the deep desert to find sanctuary among the wild desert Fremen tribes of Arrakis. Also seen for the first time, and in a stillsuit, is Zendaya as the young Fremen warrior woman, Chani.

Stillsuits are worn by every individual on the planet Arrakis (Dune) who intends to survive in the open desert. Water is so rare and precious, that every effort possible must be made to capture and retain it, which is the primary function of a stillsuit. The suit consists of various layers of materials that absorb the body’s moisture through sweat, urination, and feces, and then filters out the impurities, leaving behind drinkable water. This allows the individual wearing the suit to then drink the reclaimed water from a tube attached to the neck of their suit.

Dune will be split into two separate films. Villeneuve has said from the start he intended to split Herbert’s book in half and make two separate films. The director revealed to Vanity Fair his pitch was not unlike Warner Bros.’ recent adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” Villeneuve said to Vanity Fair. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
