Motherland: Fort Salem Season One Episode Five Review: ‘Bellweather Season’

The penultimate episode of the season unearths secrets that have been lurking under the surface.

Bloodshed and multiple weddings are in the forecast in Motherland: Fort Salem’s fifth episode, “Bellweather Season.” Excitement and the proximity of danger are ramped up in this week’s chapter.  Rife with animosities, the tension of passionate desires, and violence, the fifth episode of the season unearths secrets that have been lurking under the surface.

The story so far:

Loyalty has been the main theme this season. Abigail has worried that Raelle is not loyal to the unit, while Tally feels nothing but unquestionable loyalty to her unit. Tally seems to have a pure love and trusts her instincts, which helps her excel as a soldier and fall for Gerit. Raelle has been following her own path which binds her closer to the mysterious Scylla. Abigail’s loyalty and ambition fuel her motivation to have the best unit and make her mother proud.

“Bellweather Season” takes Abigail, Raelle, and Tally out of the barracks and into a stately Massachusetts estate for a family wedding. Eager to impress the dean of an elite college, Abigail stresses with getting her unit to act as one. However, romance issues distract Raelle and Tally. Tally learns that love is imperfect and that some people are far more dangerous than they seem. Abigail learns the Bellweather name may be more of a hindrance that a glorious legacy.

“Bellweather Season” is different from the past episodes. Where “Hail Beltane” was the sexiest episode, the fifth episode is easily the most violent. It has been nothing but training, but one recruit is forced to test out the value of her training in a Spree attack. Effects have been strong in the magic department, but the choreography of a featured fight season is particularly remarkable.  Horror and gore fans might appreciate an especially graphic and grizzly murder.

Secrets, tensions and betrayals of the season are unraveling. The past episodes have relied on character development and the strong performances by Taylor Hickson, Ashley Nicole Williams, and Jessica Sutton. While this episode is focused more on plot development and it will be interesting to see how the recruits deal with the new challenges and revelations presented in this episode. “Bellweather Season” comes to a close with the fate of a character in question. Viewers will be captivated and anxiously awaiting what’s to come.
