Nintendo is ‘investigating’ reports of Switch account security breaches

Nintendo recommends turning on two-step verification.

Over this past weekend numerous Nintendo Switch users took to social media to report unauthorized third-party logins occurring on their Nintendo accounts. With some users reporting that their payment details were used to purchase digital items from Nintendo’s eShop and others reporting purchases of Fortnite V-Bucks.

The issue has become a problem with a significant number of accounts to the point that Nintendo is now officially looking into the matter. A Nintendo spokesperson provided the following statement to Eurogamer:

We are aware of reports of unauthorised access to some Nintendo Accounts and we are investigating the situation. In the meantime, we recommend that users enable two-step verification for their Nintendo Account.

In the meantime, we recommend that users enable two-step verification for their Nintendo Account as instructed here: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-Switch/How-to-Set-Up-2-Step-Verification-for-a-Nintendo-Account-1466677.html.

If any users become aware of unauthorised activity, we encourage them to take the steps outlined at https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-Account/Nintendo-Account-Recovery-Process-1658054.html or visit https://support.nintendo.com for general support.

Nintendo began promoting two-factor authentication for Nintendo accounts a few weeks ago on Twitter.

Setting up two-factor authentication for you Nintendo account is relatively quick and easy and AIPT strongly recommends enabling the service on ANY service that offers 2fa, not just your Nintendo account.
