Sony confirms PlayStation 5 event for June 4

PS5 games and gameplay will be shown.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced plans to host a PlayStation 5 event on Thursday, June 4 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET. The news was shared today on the PlayStation blog by Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan, who promised that the digital showcase will provide at first look at the games coming to Sony’s next-generation console, the PS5.

“The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware,” said Ryan.

“This digital showcase will run for a bit more than an hour and, for the first time, we will all be together virtually experiencing the excitement together. A lack of physical events has given us an amazing opportunity to think differently and bring you on this journey with us, and hopefully, closer than ever before. This is part of our series of PS5 updates and, rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you.”

Thus far Sony hasn’t revealed very much about the PS5 beyond its logo, tech specs, and new DualSense wireless controller. There’s no word on whether or not the PS5 console itself will be revealed at the event, but that’s undoubtedly one of the biggest things that fans are hoping for.

Earlier this month Epic Games announced Unreal Engine 5 alongside a special tech demonstration on the PlayStation 5 that showed off the game engine’s new technologies nanite and lumen. Epic credited the PS5’s SSD architecture with helping make the demonstration possible, as it’s far more advanced that everything else that’s out there today.

“The hardware that Sony is launching is absolutely phenomenal,” said Epic Ceo and founder Tim Sweeney. “Not only an unprecedented amount of graphics power, but also a completely new storage architecture that blows past architectures out of the water and is far ahead of even the state-of-the-art, highest-end PCs you can buy.”
