Welcome to another edition of our Really Dumb Pop Culture Questionnaire. As its name might suggest, it’s a fun and frivolous way for creators to share their most asinine opinions on all things pop culture. Because being dumb doesn’t mean something still isn’t valuable. (Usually.)
For this edition, we quizzed artist/illustrator Blacky Shepherd, who is perhaps best known for his work on the Dynamite series Vampirella vs. Reanimator as well as Pumpkinhead. Shepherd’s other credits include G.I. Joe and Transformers, among many others.
For even more of Shepherd, be sure to follow him on Twitter @CQShep.
You have to choose one beloved film, book, comic, etc. to remove from popular canon. What would it be and why?
That’s an easy one: The Twilight series. All of em. I prefer my vampires dripping with gore, not sparkling with light.
If your life were turned into a video game, what kind of game might that be?
Open world sandbox, a la Grand Theft Auto… except with way less action and mayhem and way more ‘Hit your deadlines’ mini-games. I don’t think it would be a very popular game.
If you had to start a band, what famous musician would you pick and what genre/style are you playing together?
I’ve been in bands my whole life, ranging from thrash metal to post-punk. If I were going to get to start a new band now, with any famous musician, it would be an indie rock band with Stella Mozgawa (the drummer from Warpaint).
Here’s the whole lineup:
- Me: vocals and guitar
- Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint): Drums
- Walter Schreifels (Quicksand): Vocals and Guitar
- John Taylor (Duran Duran): Bass
- Martin Gore (Depeche Mode): Keyboards and programming
This band would get halfway through writing one amazing record and then break up in a flurry of bad blood and lawsuits.
If you had to recast Jar Jar Binks in something you wrote/drew, what would it be?
As the demon of vengeance in Pumpkinhead. You’ll have to check with Cullen Bunn for approval, of course.
You have to wear one famous character’s wardrobe for a date, who are you choosing?
Frank-N-Furter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
You’re the villain in any beloved film, TV, book, and/or comic. Who are you?
Film: Pazuzu (The Exorcist)
TV: Gus Fring (Breaking Bad)
Book: Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Dune)
Comic: Doctor Doom
Your tombstone has to bear a famous pop culture quote/slogan — which one?
“Remember… wherever you go, there you are.” – Buckaroo Banzai
You have to pick a new pen name: The first name of your favorite ’80s actor and the last name of your favorite writer/artist.
David Wrightson (actor David Warner and artist Bernie Wrightson).
You can have one famous animal as a pet — who’s moving in?
Flipper.
You’re a superhero — what’s your one biggest weakness (and why)?
Weakness? I don’t need no stinking weakness. (Okay, actually, it would be something super dumb like saltwater, or cheese.)
You’re hired to either help adapt Pride and Prejudice as an action film or Die Hard as a coming-of-age story set in World War I France. Which project do you pick and why?
Pride and Prejudice. Because Elizabeth Bennet is the action hero we need in our lives.
You can only read one author/writer for the rest of your life — who do you pick?
Frank Herbert, the Dune series.
