Hasbro reveals new Star Wars Vintage Collection playset, figures, and upcoming Haslab project during livestream

The Vintage Collection gets some much needed love.

During Hasbro Pulse’s Fan First Friday Monday livestream event on Facebook, Emily Cantelupe (Hasbro Senior Product Designer) and Patrick Schneider (Sr. Global Brand Development Manager) revealed a bunch of exciting new Star Wars products.

Much like the last livestream, the folks running the show answered some admirably challenging questions and teased plenty of stuff they couldn’t fully share yet. Unlike last time, however, there was news about the 3.75″ scale Vintage Collection worth getting excited about.

Listen to the latest episode of our Star Wars podcast, Talkin' Tauntauns!

Let’s dive in and see what new Star Wars toys we’ve got coming our way:

Haslab Project Coming August/September

Considering how well Jabba’s Sail Barge did back when it debuted without any warning, a few months of lead time should definitely help whatever this next project is.

My bet/hope is for the Razor Crest from The Mandalorian. No matter what it ends up being, though, it’s good to see the Vintage Collection getting some much needed attention along with another premium-level item.

Now this is a playset I might have to consider getting. I love the orange acrylic they used to make the the lighting appear as it did in The Empire Strikes Back.

If you buy two of these sets, you can put them together for an even cooler diorama.

It also comes with a Bespin Stormtrooper on an Empire Strikes Back card.

I’m surprised at some of the grumbling there’s been about this item since its announcement — although Paul Harrison over at Jedi Temple Archives has a good point about there not being enough screen-accurate figures to populate it. This set isn’t really complete without a super articulated/updated version of Lando, Lobot, some Bespin guards, and a few Ugnaughts.

Still, it’s a pretty cool looking place to display your Empire Strikes Back figures. Let’s hope these figures others get part of the planned focus on the Vintage Collection that Emily and Paul talked about later (and is covered near the end of the article).

The Carbon-Freezing Chamber playset will retail for $49.99 and be available June 23 for preorder with an expected fall delivery date.

The Rogue One character finally makes his Vintage Collection debut. In addition to the upgraded articulation (including rocker ankles), it also features photoreal face deco.

The figure will be available June 23 for preorder with an expected fall delivery date.

Even though the pictures above are a digital render of the yet-to-be complete physical sample, it’s exciting to know we’ll be getting this one with photoreal face deco.

The figure will be available June 23 for preorder with an expected fall delivery date.

Now let’s take a look at the reveals for Star Wars’ 6″ scale figures:

The Black Series

The first five items are from the second wave of the Empire Strikes Back 40th Anniversary Collection, which will all be packaged on oversized vintage-style cards. The will all be available June 23 for preorder with an expected fall delivery date.

This figure’s appearance has been updated to look much more screen accurate with his appearance in Empire Strikes Back.

Much as I like to give some of my collector friends a hard time for getting hung up on things like button colors and pauldron placement, Vader’s appearance in Episode V is so iconic that I may need to join the pedantic crowd and buy one of these, myself.

Snowtrooper

A nice looking update to the 2016 version of the figure.

Definitely got this guy covered, but congratulations if you needed a 6″ version of him on an Empire Strikes Cardback.

This is a single-carded version of the figure that came with the Chewbacca & C-3P0 set last year. Definitely a good option if you just wanted this figure by itself.

Dagohbah Luke Skywalker

Single-carded version of Luke from the recently revealed Dagobah Luke & Yoda set. Great figure, but I’ll be sticking with the one from the two-pack.

Now let’s take a look at some of the other Black Series offerings.

Hoth Rebel Trooper

Hoth Trooper 2

Just a repack of the figure we already got in the Empire Strikes Back 40th Anniversary Collection, but in the new/standard packaging.

This one’s an easy pass for me, but it’ll be available June 23 for preorder with an expected delivery at some point during the fall if you still need it.

Archive Line Commander Cody

I missed this one the first time around, so it was nice to have this rerelease confirmed.

The only other reveal was a ‘Bop It’ version of The Child/Baby Yoda, but that’s a little too close to child abuse for my tastes.

Q & A Reveals

  •  More clone troopers are planned for both the Black Series and Vintage Collection lines.
  • Hasbro is very well aware of recent fansite campaigns/petitions to save The Vintage Collection and are making an effort to adjust their production strategies accordingly. While there won’t be a return to the wealth of figures we saw 10 years ago, Hasbro is planning to produce more Vintage Collection products than they previously were starting in 2021.
  • San Diego Comic-Con 2020 and Star Wars exclusive items will be revealed (and made available) at a later date.
  • It is very likely that we’ll see more Gaming Greats Black Series characters in the future.
