‘Canto II: The Hollow Men’ #2 review

Canto is the representation of feeling small in a big world, but having a heart big enough to face it.

The second issue of our favorite all-ages hero is here in Canto II: The Hollow Men #2! The slow burn is over, and our little tin hero Canto sets off on his next journey. But this time he is not alone, accompanied by three of his most trusted tin friends and of course, their Malorex. They set forth to unravel the mystery of their dying clocks in hopes that discovering the source of the Shrouded Mans’ magic will give them the freedom they thought they had already earned. The first stop Aulaura’s village, where David Booher and Drew Zucker wind back the clock to bring us a familiar face and an old friend. But will this be a joyous reunion amongst friends, or is this simply a reminder of how tall the mountain in our fairy tale truly is?

Our story kicks off with our heroes on their way to Aulaura’s village. The vivacious banter is short-lived as they arrive to find that a lull has befallen the village. Canto and company set forth to investigate for any signs of the villagers or what could have happened to them. This moment is so quiet, yet it speaks so loudly as it prepares us for the end of the calm before the storm. Canto quickly comes face to face with what we will later find out to be the villagers that once brought life to this now desolate village. This is merely the beginning of the story for our tin armored warriors.

This issue in particular brings us action-packed panels, showing that size truly does not matter to Canto as he is always the tip of the sword of any encounter. Canto is reunited with Aulaura, although not the same fierce warrior we saw before. Hope is dwindling as both Canto and the readers will learn that the reach of the Shrouded Man is vast and the callous actions he has taken as a result of their previous encounter.

From the courage that we sometimes yearn for, to the doubt that at times we cannot escape, Canto is the representation of feeling small in a big world, but having a heart big enough to face it.
