AEW announces three new video games at AEW Games Special Event

AEW Games has teamed with Yukes to create what Omega hopes will be ‘one of the greatest wrestling games of all time’.

AEW showed off highly anticipated early footage of the upcoming AEW video game today at the “AEW Games Special Event” on YouTube. AEW Executive Vice President Kenny Omega, dressed as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, introduced the footage in a spoof of an early 2000s Apple event. (Incidentally, Apple had their own keynote announcement earlier today.)

Describing the type of game AEW Games hoped to publish, Omega said, “I want a game that’s easy to pick up, but difficult to master. I want it to be like NBA Jam Used to be. NFL Blitz. Dare I say it? Ken Griffey Jr.’s Home Run Derby.” When relaying what he had heard from fans who have been asking for an AEW video game, he said, “what I’ve been hearing is that you fans want a game that’s a little something more like No Mercy. A little something like Virtual Pro Wrestling. In other words, you want your game to be fun.”

Omega then revealed the game would be developed by longtime WWE partner Yukes. He premiered some in-game footage of the still-untitled game, depicting Omega facing off against Chris Jericho. Later in the footage, Hikaru Shida attacks Omega as the screen instructs us to “expect the unexpected,” suggesting inter-gender matches will be possible in the game.

No title or release date was announced, but Omega said that they hope that they can release “one of the greatest wrestling games of all time”.

After the Omega announcement, AEW referee Aubrey Edwards, also dressed as Steve Jobs, unveiled an upcoming mobile game named Elite General Manager, a text-based management game in the vein of Extreme Warfare Revenge. In the game, players can assume the role of the General Manager of Dynamite, booking matches, managing cash flow, and keeping fans happy and locker room morale high. This type of mode has been a highly requested feature of wrestling games for several years now after its removal from the WWE Raw vs. SmackDown series.

After a t-shirt presentation from Dr. Britt Baker (dressed like Steve Jobs), EVP Cody Rhodes took the stage (also, again, dressed like Steve Jobs) and announced AEW Casino Double or Nothing, a mobile casino game available today.

Lastly, Kenny Omega introduced Hideyuki Iwashita aka “Geta”, the director of WWF No Mercy for Nintendo 64, widely regarded as one of the best wrestling games of all time. Iwashita, via satellite, announced he had joined the AEW Games team and will be working on the upcoming game.
