If you’ve been reading Nick Spencer’s run on Spider-Man, you know Kindred is a hugely important aspect teased from the start in Amazing Spider-Man #1. The character has hidden in the shadows for the most part, but we’ve learned he has powers tied to demonic forces and some nifty giant centipede friends, too. The latest story arc called “Last Remains” has been giving us new answers about Kindred’s identity with some reveals I already guessed at. He’s also back and finally facing Spider-Man literally face-to-face for the first time.
The latest issue ties Kindred back to a very important, and much-maligned story in the Spider-Man library, and it goes by the name “One More Day”. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada, the fourth and final part took place in Amazing Spider-Man #545 and is marked by a scene with Mephisto making his famous deal with Mary Jane and Peter Parker. Peter gave up his marriage to save Aunt May, and later in that issue, Peter wakes up late to a party for Harry Osborn who is recently back from Europe.
Customary of Spencer’s run on Spider-Man, the series refers to famous moments in Spidey history, and today Amazing Spider-Man #53 ties back to the 2008 story. The latest issue plays out a dream while Kindred walks amongst Spider-Man laying on a coffin. As the dream takes place those familiar with Amazing Spider-Man #545 will recognize.

The difference being in Spencer’s story Peter is alarmed and knows something is going on. Everyone else is acting as they did in Amazing Spider-Man #545.
Something is afoot though as we can see the doorman for Harry’s building is possibly an agent of Kindred.
One big difference in Amazing Spider-Man #53 is that it appears Harry may be aware of what is going on. At one point in Amazing Spider-Man #53, Harry presses Peter to reiterate something he said in the original story back in 2008.

Which ties directly to the demonic nature of Mephisto, but with the understanding of Kindred’s powers being demonic has new meaning.

Interestingly enough, the way Joe Quesada draws Harry’s eyes in Amazing Spider-Man #545 has a certain knowing glare.

The very next page launched Spider-Man’s new direction — no longer married to Mary Jane and living a bachelor’s life. So why is Nick Spencer mimicking Amazing Spider-Man #545 so closely? Likely Kindred, who we know is Harry Osborn, was somehow created in Straczynski and Quesada’s story when the deal was made with Mephisto. Why else call back to “One More Day“ and tie Kindred to these moments of Harry toasting Spider-Man?
It’s not yet clear and we’ll find out soon, but the story seems to be tying itself so closely to “One More Day” the demonic elements in both stories seems quite obvious. For fans who disliked “One More Day,” they might need to rejoice soon as Amazing Spider-Man #53 appears to a rewrite to that story may be coming quite soon.
On top of all that, you have to admit it’s alps interesting that Marvel.com posted a story about where Harry Osborn has been only six days ago.
