AEW Rankings: December 9, 2020: The Omega era has begun

A new set of rankings with a brand new AEW World Champion.

Last week on Dynamite winter arrived for AEW, and with it some major changes. Sting is All Elite and the reign of the new AEW World Champion Kenny Omega has begun. Let’s see what this week’s AEW Rankings have to show us as we head into tonight’s event.

Winter is Coming just might be the most important episode of Dynamite in AEW history. Sting, The Icon, a WWE and TNA Hall of Famer, made his surprise debut during a tag match between Cody Rhodes & Darby Allin vs. Team Taz (Powerhouse Gobbs & Ricky Starks w/Taz). Things were getting pretty heated after the match between the Nightmare family and Team Taz, until suddenly the lights went out, snow fell from the sky, and out strode The Icon himself! Tonight we’ll hear from Sting directly to see why he’s come to AEW.

But even bigger news than Sting’s arrival on Dynamite was undoubtedly Kenny Omega defeating Jon Moxley to become the new AEW World Champion. After some foul play by Omega and guest announcer Don Callis, we saw The Cleaner secure his first AEW Championship a’la screwjob. But what was even crazier than the victory was that after Omega and Callis fled the ring for a waiting car service, Callis told Alex Marvez that fans will need to tune in on Tuesday night and watch Impact Wrestling to hear answers from Kenny. You can watch Omega on Impact here.

Tonight’s show is sure to be an interesting one.

No changes in the women’s division this week. But a big change is possibly looming on the horizon. Despite the fact that she’s sitting in the #5 spot on the division rankings, Abadon has still made it clear that she has her sights set on Hikaru Shida and the AEW Women’s Championship. Shida was clearly rattled during a backstage interview with Alex Marvez last week, despite her promises that she isn’t afraid of a cosplay zombie.

After defeating “Legit” Leyla Hirsch last week, Dr. Britt Baker was attacked by Thunder Rosa. These two clearly have unfinished business, so expect to see an official match scheduled in the near future.

AEW Rankings Women’s Division

Champion: Hikaru Shida (21-1 singles, 27-7 overall)

1. Big Swole (14-4 singles, 16-9 overall)
2. Nyla Rose (13-3 singles, 20-7 overall)
3. Serena Deeb (4-2) singles, 4-2 overall)
4. Penelope Ford (11-5 singles, 13-8 overall)
5. Abadon (5-1 singles, 5-1 overall)

We didn’t see any official action out of the tag division last week, but ever since the partnership between AEW and Impact became official, tag teams from both companies have been talking on Twitter about cross-promotions matches they’d like to have. I wouldn’t say it’s out of the question to see some Impact teams appear on Dynamite in the near future. After all, I can’t be the only one who wants to watch the AEW Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks wrestle the Impact Tag Team Champions The Good Brothers.

AEW Rankings Tag Team Division

Champions: The Young Bucks (11-3)

1. FTR (12-1)
2. Best Friends (19-7)
3. Jurassic Express (14-5)
4. Natural Nightmares (9-2)
5. Dark Order (14-2)
