Earlier today, Lesley Goldberg of the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that a live-action television series based in the Harry Potter universe is in development for HBO Max. Things are in the very early stages right now and no one has been officially brought on board yet. Warner Media executives are currently in discussion with various writers about the project.
The news was met with quite a bit of excitement from Harry Potter fans, although there was also a significant amount of backlash due to author J.K. Rowling’s recent anti-trans statements.
As far as what the series will be about, it’s highly doubtful we’ll see a complete rehash of the book/movie series. My guess is that it will center around Harry’s dad and his friends, aka the Marauders (pictured above) during their time at Hogwarts, although that’s pure speculation on my part.
Personally I’m burnt out on the franchise and haven’t been at all interested in the most recent content. Combine that with Rowling’s anti-trans remarks, and I just don’t see myself getting invested in whatever this project ends up being.
If it were up to me, however, the series would be a Bear Grylls/Crocodile Hunter hybrid featuring Hagrid and set before the first book. No way that happens, but I think we can all agree that would be a lot of fun.
