DC Comics continues to blow our minds with digital-first series today as they revealed two new series set in the Batman and Superman movie universes. Titled Superman ’78 and Batman ’89, both series will focus their storylines within these worlds. DC Comics has been on a tear recently announcing the digital-first series Legends of the Dark Knight, Truth & Justice, Batman & Scoopy Doo Mysteries, DCeased: Hope at World’s End, and The Next Batman: Second Son.
Batman ’89 will be by Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero). The series will help usher in the return of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and will debut a new Robin. Oh, and expect Harvey Dent/Two-Face to appear in the world which is much more rooted in a sense of realism than the comics.
Rob Venditti (Hawkman) and Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66) will collaborate on Superman ’78 to tell stories first crafted by Richard Donner and Christopher Reeves with Superman: The Movie. In Superman ’78, Lois Lane doesn’t know that Clark Kent is secretly Superman. Given Torres’ style, the book will have an older feel that suits the focus on the original film.
Expect to find these digital-first series in the summer when they launch July 27th with six digital chapters planned for each. The twelve chapters of each new series will also publish as six printed comics between August and October and as hardcover collections in October (Batman ’89) and November (Superman ’78).
