[SXSW ’21] The shorts we are looking forward to most at SXSW

Quick hits from SXSW.

South by Southwest is going online this year and the lineup is an impressive one. Along with features and documentaries, there are also plenty of short films coming to SXSW. Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and contributors Juli Cabot and Regina Chavez Muir look at the ones that have caught their eyes.

Significant Other

I’m really excited for the entire Midnight Shorts competition selection, but Significant Other, about a couple dealing with the appearance of a mysterious red orb appearing in their home, sounds particularly intriguing.

Like the Ones I Used to Know

[SXSW '21] The shorts we are looking forward to most at SXSW

This Canadian short is written and directed by Annie St. Pierre and set around the most wonderful time of the year. Quirky fun is in store when children consume too much sugar while waiting for Santa and adults have other things on their minds.

A Tale Best Forgotten

[SXSW '21] The shorts we are looking forward to most at SXSW

This Midnight Short comes from Sweden and is described as a murder ballad. Written and directed by Tomas Stark, a tale is told about a father, daughter, and dog-headed man in a house by a river that lamented as it ran. I’m all in.

Rendang of Death

[SXSW '21] The shorts we are looking forward to most at SXSW

Curried beef is one of the most popular dishes in the world. But is it popular enough to kill for? This animated short is a hand drawn story about two friends who decide to enjoy their favorite meal for lunch. The only problem is there is only one plate left.

For the Record

[SXSW '21] The shorts we are looking forward to most at SXSW

SXSW is about more than just music and movies. It is also a showcase for episodic premieres. For the Record is an anthology series about the songs that make up the lives of its cast. Every episode is framed around an album or song.

SXSW is March 16 – March 20. Tickets and a full lineup can be found here.
