There is no point in having a film festival if there is not going to be some good documentaries. This year’s SXSW will see some interesting sounding docs. The films range from dealing with topical issues to the history of folk horror. Here are the documentaries we are looking forward to seeing most at SXSW 2021.
The Oxy Kingpins
While there are countless films on America’s opioid epidemic, The Oxy Kingpins is a deep dive into the pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, and often overlooked retailers who have all played their part in the crisis.
This documentary is set in Juarez, Mexico, a city that has seen decades of violence perpetrated against women. This film examines the life of luchadoras, female wrestlers, who are working to showcase the strength of the women in Mexico and revolutionize the image of an entire gender.
Hysterical is a hilarious and heartfelt look behind the scenes of some of the leading ladies of comedy. Among the features are Fortune Feimster, Nikki Glaser, and Margaret Cho.
We Are as Gods
Stewart Brand is an influential writer who has influenced many of the people who have shaped today’s world. He has advocated for the environment, travelled the country giving out LSD, and invented Google before the internet ever existed. So it may come as no surprise that his new idea for wildlife conservation has some people upset.
Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched
Folk horror is a very interesting sub genre. Dealing with themes of isolation and religion they are some of the most frightening films of recent years. Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched looks at over 200 films and explores their popularity and impact.
SXSW is March 16 – March 20. Tickets and a full lineup can be found here.
