[SXSW ’21] ‘Made for Love’ review: Love, technology, and a sex doll

Easy peasy.

Made for Love is an HBO Max original series that deals with love and independence in the modern world. Part sci fi story, part screwball comedy, the show works in part to its strong cast and intriguing ideas. The show is about Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti) a woman who is trying to leave her billionaire husband after ten years of marriage. Unfortunately, the tech mogul has implanted a chip in her brain. This allows him to see what she does and track her every move.

The first few episodes are mainly about backstory. Why is Hazel on the run? Why did she marry Byron (Billy Magnussen) at all? What is with her father’s (Ray Romano) synthetic partner? It is wacky and a lot to take in, but Made for Love makes it all consistently interesting. The story is split into two timelines: the present that finds Hazel on the run and the past which fleshes out all the characters and their motivations.

This can lead to some confusion at times – Made for Love takes a winding path to explain Hazel and Byron’s relationship – but it is interesting the entire way. Milioti is excellent in her role as the sometimes confused and always frustrated Hazel while the show’s over the top wackiness fits perfectly into the world it has created.

SXSW is March 16 – March 20. Tickets and a full lineup can be found here.
