Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 05/10/2021

A pair of adult animated series and an alternative history show

We bring you a pair of adult animated series and an alternative history show for our Channel Surfing TV picks of the week. Learn the fate of the people of Wallachia and Trevor Belmont in the final season of Castlevania. See what kind of stories come out of the next volume of the anthology series, Love, Death, and Robots. Finally, experience a different antebellum south in The Underground Railroad.

The End of Times?

The thrilling animated series based off of a popular video game, Castlevania, has run for three seasons on Netflix. The story follows the exploits of monster hunter, Trevor Belmont, and company as they protect the people of Wallachia from Count Dracula and an army of demons. This week, it will be coming to an end with its fourth season.

The entire region of Wallachia is in disarray as various factions quarrel amongst themselves. There are some who want to use their power to rule the land while others desire to resurrect Dracula. With so much conflict and motives, it’s difficult to take anyone at their word. This could all be leading to the end of times.

Stream the entire fourth season of Castlevania on Thursday, May 13, on Netflix.

Why Not All Three?

Love, Death, & Robots is our second Netflix animated show to make our Channel Surfing TV picks with volume two arriving Friday, May 14. Get ready for eight more episodes that will contain at least one of the titular items.

It’s difficult to say what to expect in the new volume due to its anthology nature but there will be innovative story-telling, stylized animation, and a mix of science fiction, horror, and comedy. If the upcoming episodes follow the lengths of previous ones, it will be pretty easy to binge through volume two.

Ride to Freedom

Alternative history is an intriguing genre because it explores what may have happened under different circumstances. In Colson Whitehead’s novel, The Underground Railroad, the titular network is reimagined into an actual subterranean mode of transportation used to help slaves escape to freedom.

The book has been recently adapted into a limited series. The story follows Cora, an enslaved black woman, and a newcomer to her plantation named Caesar. The pair plan to runaway and hopefully catch a ride on the literal underground railroad to flee to the north.

The Underground Railroad premieres Friday, May 14, on Amazon Prime Video.
