On Monday, Beatrice Verhoeven of The Wrap revealed that Sony has cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson to play classic Spider-Man foe Kraven the Hunter in a 2023 solo film. The movie is already in development with a screenplay written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk.
Verhoeven also reported that Johnson has been locked into a multiple picture deal, which pretty much guarantees Kraven is showing up in a Spider-Man film at some point.
So yeah…can’t say that I saw a Kraven the Hunter solo film coming, especially starring an actor who already played another character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aaron Taylor Johnson’s version of Quicksilver may have perished in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he’s been front and center in everyone’s minds again thanks to WandaVision. Even though this would be a Sony property, it would also still be part of the MCU, thus making it a bit hard for people (or me at least) to ignore the casting conflict.
Also, a solo movie starring Kraven has all kinds of potential, but it’s hard to imagine what type of audience it’ll attract besides hardcore Spider-Man fans. Of course David Brooke and I will go see it, but I’m not sure there will be many others in the theater with us.
As for Kraven being part of a Spider-Man movie, that’s very exciting — especially if they do any sort of adaptation based on Kraven’s Last Hunt. Even if that doesn’t happen, however, it looks like we have even more confirmation that the Sinister Six will be tormenting Spidey on the big screen in the very near future.
