Last week, the Hollywood Reporter published their list of the top power lawyers in Hollywood. Like many of you, that wasn’t something I had any plans on reading. But buried within the article was an exciting bit on information.
Under the listing for Danai Gurira’s attorney (Jamie Mandelbaum), it was revealed that Gurira would not only reprise her role as Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, but also star in her own origin story spinoff on Disney+.
It’s no surprise that Gurira will be in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In fact, it’s hard to imagine the movie happening without her involvement. The Okoye origin story, however, is a bit harder to envision.
On one hand, telling her backstory without the involvement of Chadwick Boseman (who tragically passed away last year after a battle with cancer) would be tough.
We don’t know exactly how long T’Challa and Okoye knew each other, but the MCU films made it pretty clear that they’d known each other for a long time and were extremely close. One would have to assume that her path to becoming the Dora Milaje’s general and the head of Wakanda’s military would involve the trust and respect she earned from T’Challa and his family.
On the other hand, Danai Gurira is an incredible actress and Okoye is a badass character.
It’s also worth noting that Gurira was able to make The Walking Dead far better than it should have been during her time as one of the series’ leads. Even if a series about Okoye’s origins doesn’t explore her rise to power within the Wakandan military, it should still be all types of fun to watch.
Whatever the case, we should have something official about Danai Gurira’s new series soon now that it’s existence has been revealed.
