EXCLUSIVE Ice Nine Kills Preview: Inked in Blood

Get your icepicks handy, Ice Nine Kills fans—it’s going to be a bloodbath!

Comics fans looking for a bit of 80s slasher love mixed with metalcore have a new comic to peep called Inked in Blood. In collaboration with comics writer and editor Steve Foxe, Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas has put together a fun, gory romp directly fueled by ’80s slasher hyperbole. Not only that, but the comic dovetails with Ice Nine Kills’ horror metal theatrics. Inked in Blood releases on 6/30.

“For Inked in Blood, we really wanted to pay tribute to the greats of slasher cinema without ever feeling like we were dripping in nostalgia or retro vibes,” Foxe said. “One of the biggest benefits of working in the comic medium is that there’s no uncanny valley of special effects—Phil and Andres can go hard on the kill scenes without CGI or an obviously fake severed limb distracting you from the carnage since it all takes place in the cohesive visual identity of the book.”

“As soon as I came on board the project, Steve reached out and we talked about our mutual love for slasher films,” Sevy said. “He wanted a look that felt like a horror movie —tension, scares, splatter—not an action comic with blood.”

After marathoning slasher movies and taking notes, Sevy said he was ready to tackle the project.“Some of the previous projects I had done didn’t use a lot of black ink in the art, but I dug in and added as many shadows and as much ominous darkness as I could.”

Foxe added, “And INK’s music is already suffused with so much passion for horror, we never lacked for inspiration.”

Tying in with the events of Ice Nine Kill’s next cinematic album, ‘The Silver Scream,’ Inked in Blood follows a bullied teen super-fan who’s convinced that her favorite frontman could never have committed the grotesque crimes for which he’s now standing trial. But when a well-intentioned show of support backfires, this super-fan finds herself locked in a life-or-death battle against a copycat killer whose depravity makes your favorite slasher films seem tame by comparison.
