[CFF ’21] ‘Deep Learning’ review: Short introduces interesting premise

Premise with promise.

Deep Learning is a type of machine learning and artificial intelligence that imitates the ways humans gain certain types of knowledge. The short film of the same name follows a woman named Moira. She has signed up for an on demand video service that uses her likeness. These custom videos begin to reveal frightening things about her.

Deep Learning is a very interesting premise based in reality.

The short is very topical. Technology has become an important part of society. The idea of a service that makes custom videos based on our habits may not be as far off as it sounds. The thought it may show a darker side to people is an inevitability. A quick glance at social media and video sharing services is proof of what can happen when technology becomes intertwined with people’s personal lives.

Deep Learning is a very interesting premise based in reality. The film never quite provides the emotional impact it should. The audience gets an idea of what Moira is going through, but there is no insight into the character. The short gets so caught in capturing the feeling of what could be that it does not accurately get around to what is happening.

The Chattanooga Film Festival takes place from June 24 – June 29
