Much like last year, genre television will reign supreme during September’s 2021 Emmy Awards. This time it was Lovecraft Country and WandaVision joining the Star Wars: The Mandalorian to pull down 60 nominations.
The Mandalorian‘s 24 nominations include:
- Outstanding Drama Series
- Outstanding Writing for Dave Filoni
- Outstanding Music Composition for Ludwig Göransson
- Best Supporting Actor for Giancarlo Esposito
- Best Guest Actor for Carl Weathers and Timothy Olyphant

Lovecraft Country‘s 18 nominations include
- Outstanding Drama Series
- Outstanding Writing for Misha Green
- Outstanding Cinematography
- Outstanding Special Visual Effects
- Outstanding Music Composition for Laura Karpman and Raphael Saadiq
- Outstanding Lead Actor for Jonathan Majors
- Outstanding Lead Actress for Jurnee Smollett
- Outstanding Supporting Actor for Michael K. Williams
- Outstanding Supporting Actress for Aunjanue Ellis
- Outstanding Guest Actor for Courtney B. Vance
…and hopefully a giant wake up call for HBO, who made the colossally bad decision to cancel Lovecraft Country and let Apple TV+ sign showrunner Misha Green.
I know some folks think this was a mutual decision, but based on the incredible/heartbreaking glimpses Green’s been sharing on Twitter of her plans for Lovecraft Country season 2, that looks a lot less likely.

Some of our other favorite shows here at AIPT who picked up Emmy nominations this year include:
- Ted Lasso (20)
- The Flight Attendant (9)
- Top Chef (6)
- The Boys (5)
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (5)
- Cobra Kai (4)
- Central Park (2)
- Love, Death, + Robots (2)
- Mythic Quest (2)
- Doom Patrol (1)
- Gangs of London (1)

I should also note that my beloved Star Wars: The Clone Wars picked up 3 Daytime Emmy nominations. While those aren’t necessarily given the same reverence as the Primetime Emmys, it’s still good to know that the best season the series got some well-deserved recognition.
Click here if you’d like to read the (extremely long) full list that also includes reality/variety television nominations.
