‘Lovecraft Country’ will not be back for Season 2

HBO announced in a statement that Misha Green’s ‘Lovecraft Country’ would not be returning for a second season.

On Friday,’s Nellie Andreeva exclusively revealed some very sad news: Despite previous hints and reports to the contrary, HBO’s hit series Lovecraft Country will not be returning for a second season.

HBO confirmed the decision in a statement to Deadline, explaining:

We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.

So yeah…one of the most entertaining, groundbreaking, and socially relevant shows on television will not be getting a second season that both the cast and crew appeared to be excited about making.

Lovecraft Country

Now before anyone’s blood starts boiling (like mine did), it’s worth pointing out that Andreeva strongly hints at this being a mutual decision between HBO and showrunner Misha Green. Much as I would’ve loved to see Green continue the story, she’s the type of storyteller you can trust when she doesn’t think there’s a good tale to tell.

There also isn’t any source material to draw from since the series is loosely based on Matt Ruff’s singular Lovecraft Country novel — although the show diverged in many distinct ways that were significantly better. Although the series ended with an extremely satisfying conclusion, it also set up what could have been a fantastic second chapter. That’s unlikely to happen now unless Misha Green changes her mind and/or another network is able to obtain the rights to the series.

Or perhaps the adventures of Diana and her pet shoggoth Sprinkles will be told in another medium. Whatever the case, at least we’ll always have that one fantastic season of television…and one heck of a great final shot.
