In the official preview for tonight’s episode of 205 Live, WWE mentions the following as part of the hype for the show’s main event of Joe Gacy vs. Josh Briggs:
The purple brand will now occasionally play host to matches where one or multiple Superstars eclipse the 205-pound weight limit, setting the stage for a colossal main event between Gacy and Briggs!
While not surprising, this decision does feel at least tangentially related to the report floating around that big changes are coming to NXT and WWE at-large, particularly when it comes to the size and wrestling style of its performers. WWE seems to be headed back to a time of muscle-bound former football players and bodybuilders, as opposed to the more fast-paced, indie style that has come to define NXT and 205 Live.
Of course, this means that 205 Live is now no longer for wrestlers under 205 pounds, nor is it live — the shows are typically taped following NXT on Tuesdays — calling into question the justification for the brand at all.
