Champions #9’s release is bittersweet, coming at a time where the title’s cancellation was just announced. When the news broke, I checked social media and was immediately swarmed by posts from disappointed fans, watching as words poured in from hashtags pleading with Marvel to continue the beloved series. For many, Champions was the book they’d always wanted — a book about a group of young kids, most of whom are textually queer or people of color, coming together to make a difference. It’s a book whose premise hits quite poignantly in recent days.
And that’s part of what makes Champions #9 hit so hard — it’s the way it has its finger on the pulse, knowing what young kids want these days. Young readers want to feel like they’re making a difference in the world, like all the injustice they see on the news daily is something they can actually change. A book like this isn’t just wish fulfillment for kids, it’s hope. And Champions #9 finds it heart in that sentiment, particularly where Kamala Khan is concerned.
Khan gets some of her best moments since Outlawed began, showcasing her steadfast desire to always stand up for the right thing. Danny Lore does such a great job making every character sound unique, and it’s clear they have a steady vision for this cast. Veccio’s art also shines here and some of his best panels are the ones he gets a little more unique with, branching out in fun ways.

Champions #9 ends on a hopeful note that promises a heartfelt final issue. While it’s sad to see the series go (and hopefully, Marvel will think about a renewal with so many of these characters set to appear in MCU projects soon), Champions #9 is another solid issue in a series that’s only been getting better with each new volume. This title is sure to resonate with its target demographic and issue #9 is no different.
