NYCC ’21: Captain Burnham is a wrecking ball in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 trailer

‘Uncertainty is a central theme,’ Michelle Paradise says, so expect a lot of surprises in the new season.

“Leadership is about balance. Your acts of bravery are huge swings of the pendulum, and there’s a very fine line between a pendulum and a wrecking ball.”

That critique of Discovery’s newest captain, Michael Burnham comes from the Federation’s president, a character we’ll meet in Season 4 whose ancestry, according to Executive Producer Michelle Paradise, includes Bajoran, Cardassian, and Human.

Star Trek: Discovery‘s Season 4 trailer premiered….twice at Saturday’s panel at New York Comic Con. The cast also dished on what to expect in the new season, though repeatedly joking about their fear that saying too much might get them fired.

Burnham wasn’t expecting a big threat this soon into her captaincy, says her portrayer, Sonequa Martin-Green. That latest threat is a mysterious gravitational anomaly, and everyone is feeling the pressure to resolve the problem. According to star Anthony Rapp, Stamets is frustrated it’s a problem he can’t solve. Tilly too, according to Mary Wiseman, feels the pressure after having advanced so quickly in command duties. “[The anomaly] spirals her off into this personal journey,” Wiseman says.

Wilson Cruz says of his character, that Dr. Culber is “doing double duty,” acting more regularly as ship’s counselor in addition to his normal role. Cruz also comments on whether Culber will keep his promise to make Gray corporeal. “When Dr. Culber makes a promise, he usually keeps it,” Cruz says before confirming Gray will be seen.

But “uncertainty is a central theme,” Michelle Paradise says, so expect a lot of surprises in the new season, which premieres November 18th.
