The Beyond Corporation has no chill in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ #78

Dangers abound for Ben Reilly in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #78.

Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.

From the very start, the Beyond Corporation hasn’t seemed like the kindest company. Ben Reilly–the new Spider-Man–certainly is cheery and happy to have his girlfriend Elizabeth back, but that’s in his nature. Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are also employees of the company and don’t seem to have any reservations with the company.

That said, the art has shown workers at Beyond cast in shadow looking coldly as if Spider-Man is but a pawn. Frankly, though, Amazing Spider-Man #78 reveals it’s far more insidious than looking angry from afar.

The issue opens where we left off with Amazing Spider-Man #77 and Morbius has bitten Spider-Man. He’s soon fleeing back to the Beyond Corporation for help but faints. He’s soon whisked off to the med-bay for medical assistance.

The doctors truly want him to get better, but soon the head of the superhero development at Beyond, Maxine Danger, has a few questions. She’s wondering what Morbius’ bite might do to Spider-Man.

Everyone in the room is a bit haunted by her inquiry. Maybe that’s a good sign as far as Beyond Corporation employees in general, but if Maxine is running the show this could be very bad for Spider-Man in the future.

Maxine drops it, thankfully, but given Spider-Man just started and Maxine seems more interested in using Ben Reilly like a test tube. It’s clear the Beyond Corporation has its priorities set in the wrong place.

What this means for the series going forward remains to be seen as it could just be a distraction to get readers thinking Maxine is evil, when really her goals are for the greater good. Or, maybe he’s collecting Spider-Man villains like Morbius, Kraven in the next issue, and others to make a super-duper combo villain? Either way, make sure to go read Amazing Spider-Man #78 in its entirety as there’s plenty good there.

Stay tuned to AIPT as we learn more about this morally dubious character.
