‘Twas the Night’ review: Christmas at Bernie’s

Try doing it a whole weekend.

Twas the Night takes a familiar and fun comedy premise and attempts to imbue it with the holiday spirit. Everything seems to be working out for Holly (Nicole Pringle) and Nick (David S. Perez) both personally and professionally. When Holly accepts help from a man dressed as Santa Claus, it leads to a chain of events that will make this the most memorable Christmas ever.

As expected, the film centers around the wacky hijinx that involve the couple trying to keep the secret of the unconscious Santa from their in-laws. This means there are plenty of ridiculous situations and the ability to suspend disbelief is a requirement when watching this. Twas the Night never shies from the fact that it is an over the top comedy.

The funny thing about these kinds of comedies is most audiences have low expectations for them while simultaneously holding them to high standards. It’s a screwball comedy, so you shouldn’t expect much, but since it is aiming so low it better be really funny. It is almost unfair.

It is a riddle Twas the Night is never able to figure out.

It is also a riddle Twas the Night is never able to figure out. The film is not without its laughs, there just are not enough to make it watchable. Shots linger for an uncomfortably long time while the performances seem belabored. The script seems willing to live down to what is – or in this case, not – expected.

The plot is so laser focused on its antics and two main characters that if forgets the rest of the cast. The result is a story that is kind of funny, often awkward, and mostly uninspired. There is a good movie inside Twas the Night. Hopefully, someone will find it.
