DC Comics is one of the best publishers of anthology series, and today their holiday special ‘Tis the Season to be Freezin’ is out in comic shops. Collecting eight stories, this anthology utilizes characters like Tim Drake, Vixen, Harley Quinn, Bizarro, Flash, the JLQ, and Firestorm. It’s an eclectic mix, but no one hero is bigger than another so these slightly lesser-known characters can shine.
‘Tis the Season To Be Freezin’ opens with “One Snowy Night” by Alan Burnett and Paul Dini with Jordan Gibson on art. If you dig Batman: The Animated Series you’re going to love this tale. The art is incredible, with great use of color to give Mr. Freeze a very creepy vibe similar to TAS. The colors by Monica Kubina are fantastic too–Mr. Freeze’s beady red eyes are incredibly creepy–and Tim looks great in his Robin costume. The sentiment of the story is also excellent. Simply put, it’s great comics.
There are highlights throughout this anthology worth noting, like Tee Franklin and Yancy Labat’s fun use of super pets, the promise of more JLQ after Andrew Wheeler and Meghan Hetrick’s “Break the Ice” story, and Bobby Moynihan and Pop Mhan’s Flash and Captain Cold story as a cute conclusion.
Fans of Bizarro won’t want to miss Amedeo Turturro and Jason Howard’s story called “Bizarro v. Seasonal Depression: Dawn of Climate Change!” He faces off against a whole team of backward baddies including the hilarious Dr. Hot, who is “unable to die only if they aren’t perpetually sweaty!” The backward speak is a real trip to read and untangle and the story comes with a happy ending and good holiday spirit.
“A Change of Heart” by Tara Roberts and Eric Battle focuses on Harley Quinn while mashing a whole lot of familiar faces in the DC universe into one story. It’s manic and fun that suits Harley Quinn.
Some of these stories don’t quite have the same holiday zing a good enough twist for its characters to call them must-read, but in general, each story is well crafted and well done. The opening story is certainly must-read though, and the general holiday cheer is unmistakable. You just don’t get comics like this regularly, unless of course, you love DC Comics anthologies, in which case it’s a tradition well worth investing in.
