The Channel Surfing TV picks for this week include some of Michael K. Williams’ final on-screen work and a pair of DC Comic series. Learn about the world of illicit trades in Black Market with Michael K. Williams. Head to the Pacific Northwest to unravel the mystery of the CW’s latest superhero in Naomi. Then, The Suicide Squad receives a spinoff featuring one of its merciless killers in Peacemaker.

Real-World Journalism

We lost a talented actor last September in Michael K. Williams. He had many memorable roles in such projects as The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Lovecraft Country. With his docuseries, Black Market, he hoped to shed some insight in areas people have preconceived ideas of to show why people do the things they do and why crime pays for them.

Most of the second season was filmed before Williams’ untimely passing and now it is ready to be seen. Some of the dangerous world economies that will be explored include the new era of credit card scamming, how NYC’s secret world of boosting and flipping has reshaped mainstream fashion, black market body modifications and more.

Season two of Black Market with Michael K. Williams premieres tonight on Vice TV.

Before She Was Powerhouse

Naomi McDuffie is one of DC Comics’ more recent superheroes. She was created by writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Walker with artist Jamal Campbell. Though Naomi might not have the same library of source material to draw from, Ava DuVernay thought the character was special enough that she wanted to develop a show around her.

Naomi is set to join the already packed roster of DC series on The CW. Much like the comic, the titular character lives a normal life in a Pacific Northwest town but things are turned upside down when a superhero event occurs locally. She then begins to question everything about herself and must discover the truth behind her origins.

The series premiere of Naomi is Tuesday, January 11, on The CW.

Give Peace a F*cking Chance

James Gunn has a knack for making audiences care for lesser-known comic characters. In The Suicide Squad, John Cena had a breakout role as a cold-blooded killer who desires peace no matter the cost. In the post-credits scene of the film, we find out the character is under the supervision of Waller’s subordinates.

Peacemaker takes place after the movie and explores the origins of the titular antihero while following him on various missions. He is joined by familiar faces from Belle Reve, John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, along with new team members Vigilante and Leota Adebayo.

The first three episodes of Peacemaker will be released Thursday, January 13, on HBO Max.
