[Sundance ’22] ‘The Dark Heart’ review: True crime series draws audiences into is web of lies

Dark and ominous.

The Dark Heart is the latest release from director Gustav Moller. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the show is based on true events. Bengt has made “loads of money” by leasing his land to the farmers who live on it. His daughter Sanna is ready to inherit the land and make drastic changes. When she falls in love with the son of a farmer, things take a dark turn.

The show has a majestic look. Much of it takes place on the forested land that Bengt owns. There is almost a mystic quality to many of the scenes. The initial scenes of Sanna and Marcus falling in love are shot beautifully and give the moments a storybook feel. This is contrasted by the times The Dark Heart spends in the city. Everything is cold and unforgiving. They are fact filled moments as opposed to the emotionally packed almost rash scenes spent away from the offices and high rises. It adds to the tension of everything that is going on.

The first three episodes introduces the audiences to the principal players. Tanja leads a group of volunteers that look for missing people. She is headstrong and smart and easy to get behind. From there, it is impossible to know who to trust and who is lying. But it is definitely a fascinating watch that will have audiences anticipating the final two episodes of the show.

The Sundance Film Festival is online January 20- January 30. Tickets can be purchased and a full lineup can be found here.
