Dakota Johnson to play Madame Web in Sony Spider-Man spin-off film

…but which version of the character will she play?

On Thursday, Mia Galuppo of the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Dakota Johnson has been tapped to star as Madame Web in a Sony Spider-Man spinoff film.

We haven’t heard much about the project since way back in May of 2020, when it was announced that S.J. Clarkson would be helming a Madame Web movie. Obviously this news brings the bizarre (and potentially awesome) project back into the spotlight. Dakota Johnson is the type of rising star who’s sure to bring more attention to a movie that will definitely need a boost in the buzz department.

Madame Web may be well known to avid Spider-Man comic readers (like most of us on this site are), but she’s likely to elicit little more than a wary/confused look from general audiences. If the latter applies to you, though, then we’ve got you covered with a very brief primer on the surprisingly important/cool character from Spider-Man’s supporting cast.

Madame Web

Meanwhile, the main question now becomes which version of Madame Web will lead the film. My money is on Julia Carpenter over Cassandra Web–mostly because Dakota Johnson is much closer to that version in both age and gorgeousness.

Whatever the case, Sony has an excellent actress leading a film that could give Doctor Strange a run for its money in the trippy/cool department if they do it right.
