Warner Bros. has added a promo at the end of the Bat and Cat trailer originally released December 27th. The promo features three graphic novels including Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Batman: The Long Halloween, and Darwyn Cooke’s Batman: Ego.
It can’t be a coincidence these three graphic novels were revealed, in part because The Batman director Matt Reeves revealed Batman Ego was a huge influence on the upcoming movie. At the DC FanDome event in 2020, Reeves said “I wanted to get into the mindset of the character and I wanted to think of the psychology — for me, I think one of the cool deep dive ones was Darwyn Cooke’s Ego,” and that’s about “confronting the beast that is Batman. There’s a kind of duality.”
“There’s a lot in what I was trying to do in the story about him confronting the shadow side of himself. The degree to which you have self-knowledge, you’re able to understand your motivations, but he’s broken, Batman. So while he’s doing all of these things for the reasons that he thinks is right and that has a heroic sort of grounding in them, there’s also many things that are driven by the parts of himself, he doesn’t yet know. So I would say that that psychological union shadow side, that sort of version of it, is very much connected to that vision from Darwin Cooke, from Ego.”
Batman: Year One is the obvious connection to The Batman as well since it’s his first-year crime-fighting while Batman: Long Halloween might be thrown into the mix due to the variety of villains that pop up. Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler are all confirmed to appear in the film.
