‘Fistful of Vengeance’ review: Great fight scenes highlight supernatural action flick

Lots of cussing here.

Fistful of Vengeance’s opening moments live up to its hard hitting name. Kai is a Wu assassin who teams with his friends Lu Xin and Tommy to track a killer. The three are looking for revenge after the death of a loved one. They are soon dragged into a battle that involves the fate of the world. The first few moments foreshadow the best parts of the film. The fight scenes in Fistful of Vengeance are nothing short of amazing. Mixing old school kung fu with the supernatural, the battles continually top themselves. The movie is hard hitting and will constantly impress audiences.

Director Roel Reine shoots the movie perfectly. This is most evident during one of the climactic fights. As Kai continues to fight off attackers coming from all directions, the camera moves with the battle. It adds another dimension to the already fast paced action. The middle part of the movie is filled with a long fight scene that is broken up with small spurts that allow the audience to catch their breath. There are also some great overhead shots that give a sense of scale.

The action sequences are top notch but the adventure portions of Fistful of Vengeance are painfully lacking. After an eye catching finale to the cold open, things grind to a halt. This is mainly due to having explain events from Wu Assassins. (The movie serves as a follow up to the series.) The pacing is also an issue, however. It is incredibly slow which is especially jarring after the fast paced opening.

Those looking for fast paced action should definitely check this out. The plot is paper thin and includes a strange nonlinear sex scene and a surprising decision regarding the revenge plotline. this is the type of film that people do no watch for story, however. The incredibly fight scenes are the real draw here and easily overshadow the missteps made by Fistful of Vengeance.

Fistful of Vengeance comes exclusively to Netflix February 17
