On Tuesday, Adam B. Vary at Variety exclusively revealed plans for a new animated Lord of the Rings film from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will take place approximately 200 years before the events in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The story will revolve around the Kingdom of Rohan and the exploits of its besieged ruler, Helm Hammerhand.
You’re totally forgiven if you don’t know who that is (I certainly didn’t), but the overwhelming majority of you will know of the fortress named after him: Helm’s Deep.
Although no animation progress was shown, Warner Bros. did release some concept art that Joseph Chour’s Sola Entertainment is drawing inspiration from for the project.
According to Vary’s report, Philippa Boyen (who was a writer on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films) is executive producing the film while Kenji Kamiyama and Joseph Chour (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) will direct. The screenplay is being written by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou based on a script by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the duo who penned The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Vary also revealed some of the visual creative team on the project, including Oscar winning special effects artist Richard Taylor, Oscar-winning art director art director Alan Lee, and Tolkien illustrator/concept artist John Howe.
If that stacked production team has you excited, however, then prepare to have some patience. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim won’t be released until April 12, 2024. It is also not connected (aside from some undoubtedly purposeful synergy) to Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power.
