Amazon debuts first trailer for ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’

The first trailer for Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings series doesn’t reveal much about the story, but it looks absolutely gorgeous.

During the Super Bowl on Sunday, Amazon debuted the first trailer for their upcoming Prime Video streaming series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This was accompanied by a press release that referred to the series as a “multi-season” drama. Most of us likely already assumed that was the case, but it’s nice to have confirmation.

Let’s watch the 60-second spot below before diving back into things.

In case you haven’t stayed up to date on things, this story will take place during during Middle-earth’s Second Age, which is thousands of years before the events of the The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It will revolve around the forging of the Rings of Power and how they shaped the history of Middle-earth.

As you can see, the show looks to have made good use of every penny from its nearly $500 million first season budget. In addition to the huge cast, the special effects, locations, and cinematography look absolutely gorgeous.

Vanity Fair already did a fantastic breakdown of what characters are in the series (and who’s playing them) that even my nerdy self won’t even pretend to try to match. That said, there were a few images that many Lord of the Rings fans likely picked up on.

There were multiple shots of a young Galadriel (played by Morfydd Clark), including this one of her scaling a giant ice wall.

We also get a very brief glimpse of a young Elrond (played by Robert Aramayo) looking extremely grumpy.

I have no idea what type of monster this is, but I can’t wait to see the full scene or scenes that it’s featured in.

And in a slightly deeper cut from Lord of the Rings mythology (at least for us casual reader/watchers), we get a couple shots of Prince Durin IV (played by Owain Arthur) of Khazad-dûm…or as you might remembering seeing/reading about it first, the great Dwarven realm of Moria.

There’s plenty more to feast your eyes on in the trailer, but not much to will clue us in on how the series’ narrative is going to play out. Considering all the hype around this project, my guess is that Amazon will continue to keep a lid on things as much as they can until this fall.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuts September 2 exclusively on Prime Video.
