‘Killing Eve’ season 4 episode 4 review: Delightfully Dark

On tonight’s Killing Eve, Carolyn heads to Cuba and finds an unlikely partner.

When we last left Killing Eve, we dove into Villanelle’s psyche as she sought treatment from Martin to assess whether she can really change. Following another betrayal by the titular character, the assassin finds herself in a prison cell.

Well, that didn’t last long. Almost immediately, Hélène arranges for Villanelle’s release. It seems a quick and convenient solution to Villanelle’s situation although with only four more episodes of the entire series left, we can’t waste any time. Hélène stating that no one leaves the Twelve not only explains why she aided the formerly incarcerated woman, but also sheds insight on her own motives of killing off members. Maybe once she works her way to the top, Hélène can finally leave the life behind.

On this week’s Killing Eve, we receive a mixing of bosses and subordinates. First, there is the unlikely team up between Villanelle and Carolyn. It’s a fun way to continue to explore the former’s moral struggles. Like Martin before, the ex-MI6 agent asks the right questions with regards to Villanelle’s infatuation with Eve over a game of Truth or Dare. Actresses, Fiona Shaw and Jodie Comer have good chemistry and an interesting dynamic. Carolyn shows more of a willingness to let go when around the trained killer as demonstrated by her excellent air guitar skills.

However, Villanelle not killing the woman she kidnapped is further proof that she’s growing as a person. It’s interesting that the two have even more of a history back to Villanelle’s orphanage days and Carolyn provides a different perspective on the nature versus nurture debate to think on. Comer is also devilishly delightful as her character goes back to her assassin ways from admiring the handiwork of another killer to her interrogating skills. It’s all done with a playful soundtrack to accentuate the guilty fun.

Elsewhere on Killing Eve, the awkward seduction between Hélène and the show’s other main character endures. They have made a game out of it as they race to see who can catch the mysterious Lars first (it’s actually a three-way with Carolyn on the hunt as well).

Their relationship can run from steamy hot to really uncomfortable. No better example is the bathtub scene. No matter how hardcore superspy Eve has become, she can’t escape bungling things up some times. There is a sadistic side to Hélène. We’ve already seen her burn Eve’s hand and now the Twelve member takes great pleasure it revealing how she freed Villanelle. With the wild card out on the loose again, you never know what could happen.

It is curious to see what role Pam will play considering how much screen time she’s receiving for the final season. Her training is amusing now that she has a chance to experience the outside world. We get to see more of Konstantin but his treatment of her is no different than her toxic family and it pushes Pam into intriguing places. At least her handler shows appreciation when she is able to surprise him.

“It’s Agony and I’m Ravenous” is darkly delightful and is fueled by the pairing and chemistry between Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw.

New episodes Killing Eve are released Sundays on BBC America.

The Villanelle and Carolyn team up and how the former brings out a diffferent side of the latter; air guitar skills and all.
The awkwardness during Eve and Hélène's bath scene.
A little too quick and convenient way to get Villanelle out of jail.
