Kelly Thompson’s Captain Marvel run could be thus far described by its fast-paced, action-packed plots which push the titular hero in new directions. Issue #37 tones down the story to offer a more lighthearted plot.
Issue #37 can be categorized as being mostly fluff, but at least what we’re given is a whole lot of fun. Thompson has a great eye for humor and knows just how to infuse it into her comics. Issue #37’s highlights include Carol and Monica’s banter as well as the “girls night” that ensues, giving readers something fun for the time being.

Julius Ohta’s art really elevates the book, showcasing expressive characters and sets that perfectly convey the moods written. It’d be a pleasure to see him on more of this title in the future.
While the issue is fun, it is a bit uneven and Binary’s writing here is sort of reminiscent of the Carol and Lauri-Ell plot earlier in the run, making it feel a bit redundant at times. However, the ending pages tease a really fun Annual for Carol, which will touch on one of her more forgotten past stories.
The glaring issue with this entry in Thompson’s Captain Marvel is that it mainly takes place in a club –and Carol is shown with a drink. While the drink itself was probably accidentally left in on the artist’s part, the idea that a woman in recovery like Carol would want to be at a club of all places is very puzzling.
Overall, Captain Marvel #37 is a fun issue with great art, paving the way for what should be an interesting next issue.
