‘Cursed Films II’ review: Did you hear about ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’

If you look hard enough…

Cursed Films II visits Hollywood myths and legends to discuss the films that are often the subject of, “Did you hear about?” type conversations. The docu-series starts with an episode about a familiar movie. While it sounds like this may be boring, the show remains interesting the entire time.

The Wizard of Oz is one of the most infamous cursed films of all time and few have been the subject of more speculation. Naturally, Cursed Films II touches on the Munchkin that can supposedly be seen hanging in the background of one of the scenes. While it will not change anyone’s opinion, it is interesting to see different versions of the footage.

There is also discussion of the experimental special effects causing harm to actors and stories about the conduct of the little people on the set. What the show does best is highlight what and why people believe. Cursed Films II begins with a definition of what it is to be cursed.

There are many interviews during the show. During these moments, it becomes clear why people like talking about these types of films so much. Whether they believe or do not, each person strongly believes in what they are saying. It makes for a great premiere episode.

Rosemary’s Baby is the next episode and the bulk of it is spent talking about the Sharon Tate murder. This installment is fascinating as it reveals so much about the movie. For example, some horror fans know about William Castle’s involvement with the film. What will be new to many is all the shocking coincidences that befell his family afterwards.

There are also some strange stories involving The Beatles and Sammy Davis Jr. that lead to a discussion about the term “God wink”. As someone in Cursed Films II states, anyone can connect two things together if they look hard enough, but the amount in Rosemary’s Baby is startling.

The bulk of the show is spent speaking about Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders. This includes a recounting of all the strange occurrences that have happened in the area and a sad segment involving a former Playmate. Cursed Films II first two episodes handles two familiar subjects in ways that will hold the interest of anyone who watches.

Cursed Films II premieres Thursday, April 7 on Shudder with a new episode premiering every week
