The second season of Undone is almost here with the premiere set at the end of the month. During WonderCon, the official trailer was released for the adult animated psychological dramedy. Also, during the event, we spoke with executive producers and creators, Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and stars, Rosa Salazar, Angelique Cabral, and Constance Marie. They teased what fans can expect in the upcoming season and talked about series as a whole.
With regular use of time travelling and reality manipulation, the series keeps an aura of vagueness, particularly surrounding what’s really going on with the main character, Alma. Many on the show enjoy this ambiguity and how people interpret the events. Purdy stated, “We really welcome that conversation for people to come to it, experience it, and extrapolate their own viewpoint of it.”
Cabral is always curious to learn viewer’s opinions. “Well, it’s always so exciting to hear what people think. right? Everyone’s take is so different. That’s what I think is so special about this show is we don’t tell you. You get to decide. So, there’s a lot of options and a lot of questions and we don’t answer them on purpose.”
However, don’t expect anything to be cleared up on Undone. Bob-Waksberg explained, “If you’re looking for a definite answer, you’re watching the wrong show I’m sorry to say. I want to get that out there because I don’t want people to think we’re finally going to resolve all the mysteries. This is a show about exploring the mysteries not about resolving the mysteries. But yes, you will get some answers, perhaps, but those answers might not be true. You’ll have to keep watching.”
He later added, “There are people who are almost dreading new episodes because they don’t want their theories to be wrong. They want to believe whatever their interpretation is and I would say to those people, don’t worry, you can keep believing it.”
With all these varying perspectives, it can lead to some interesting conversations and maybe a little more understanding towards the person next to you. Marie used an excellent metaphor. “If you look at people as puzzles or recipes, everyone has their own ingredients that made them the way that they are. If they could just have compassion for that journey that their fellow human being has been through, I think we could get along a lot more.”
Purdy echoed that statement. “To realize we’re all coming together with different experiences, sharing a common experience. Maybe that creates a little more empathy. That each of us are carrying a lens based off of our lifetime of experience and we can see where people are coming from more.”
Heading into the new season of Undone, there were high expectations from the fans. “[T]he pressure is on to do more of what people loved but also not too much of more of the same thing and to keep surprising people. Keep surprising yourself. Keep it fresh for you and build off what came before,” Bob-Waksberg shared. “We never rested at any point like, we know how this show is. We know how it works. we can just phone it in. It was a constant conversation of how do we explore more in this universe and how do we push the limits even more.”
About the upcoming season itself, he continued, “We really wanted to dig deeper into the mythology of this family. One of the joys of a season two is you get to build off of what came before…Season one is really centrally about this one event in this family’s history. For season two we were thinking how we can expand on that.”
Salazar also spoke of how much bigger things are becoming in the new episodes. “In the first season we did a lot of cool stuff. We’re jumping into the universe. Now we’re in the cosmos. People are like ‘Whoa, that’s so cool.’ The second season is a trillion times more expansive than that. I mean, we’re trotting all over the globe. We’re in the cosmos. We’re going down the rabbit hole of people’s memories. We’re going through generations upon generations of stories and trauma. If we went this far, now we’re just breaking down all of the barriers. We can go anywhere we want.”
Despite everything going on and the path the characters take on Undone, their experiences are still grounded. “The kind of wild external adventure that the characters go on, is ultimately an internal exploration of spirit so I think that’s an interesting aspect of this season as well,” Purdy said. She also discussed the approach for season two.
“Well, we feel the family dynamics are really strong so continuing seeing all of our members together playing off each other. Also, the sister relationship. We wanted to go deeper with that relationship. And to have Rosa’s character, Alma, really be kind of the mentor, the faulted mentor, to her sister, Becca, when she realizes that Becca has powers and abilities.”
Purdy resumed, “Alma, herself, can’t access her own powers and abilities so it becomes this push/pull between the two of them where she’s trying to get Becca invested in the time travel and the journey and the exploration perhaps to the detriment of her sister. Riding that balance of is she really trying to help save the family or is she searching for her own purpose and feel validated in her own actions. Is she hurting her sister in this adventure or is she helping her and playing with those dynamics between the two of them.”
With regards to the main family of three, there’s some intriguing things going on. Salazar provided insight on her character in Undone. Much of what she does is partially a distraction to keep her from deep reflection. Alma is “All in outwardly. I’ll fix my mom. I’ll fix my dad. I’ll help my sister. I’m going to help the family. The family, the family, the family.”
“It isn’t until the very end when she’s realizing, oh my god, the biggest limit. The only place I’m not willing to go. I’ll go into the pogroms of Poland. I will go to Mexico. I will go into [Rebecca’s] marriage. I will go into the past. I will go into those memories. I will not go into myself because I’m so f**king afraid of what I might find in there.”
Meanwhile, Marie mentioned how Alma’s mother goes on a heartbreaking spiritual trek. Purdy elaborated a little bit more. “Camila, has a secret. In the first season, she sort of really believes she knows what’s right, knows what the truth is and needs to help save everyone around her especially her daughter Alma. In the second season, she has a secret that she’s dealing with and she doesn’t want anyone to know about because she is so buttoned up. The sisters are going to figure out this secret so that gives them a new shade on the mom, a new complication, a new wrinkle in her character.
The cast and creatives shared so much about the upcoming season of Undone it’s surprising that not more was spoiled.
The entire second season of Undone will drop April 29 on Prime Video.
